EtiKoppaka
Wooden Toys: The Famous
Wood toys made at Kondapalli, Eti Koppaka. The toys of Etikoppaka
include vermilion boxes and bangles. Toys for marriage ceremonies
and rituals, toys meant for children, play bowls (lakkapidatalu)
& an entire set of cooking vessels in miniature form. The toys
are made with locally available light ankudu wood. Another
unique feature of these toys is that they are without colors. Some
of the toys are doll tops, milkman, bangles, tanker, hairpins and
candle stands. Among utilitarian objects, salt boxes, spice jars,
bowls are prominent.
The toys of Etikoppaka are not just a child’s companions, but find
many more uses. From candle stands to vermilion boxes and bangles,
these pieces are very popular at weekly markets. Craftsmen also make
toys that are used for marriage ceremonies and other rituals. Their
enchanting designs, bright colours and earthly appeal are very
attractive. Today, they are a part of the rural folk tradition. Toys
made at Etikoppaka, a village in Visakhapatnam district, reveal some
little-known cultural practices of that region and display the
creative skills of its makers.
